(Minot, ND) — Minot City Council is considering if police should be allowed to use license plate readers. Minot patrol vehicles already come equipped with the technology but they aren’t allowed to use them without council approval. The readers are programed to look for plates that have been placed in a database that tracks stolen vehicles, missing persons and other serious crimes. Opponents of the readers say the technology increases opportunities for police to abuse their authority. Proponents say the technology helps with efficiency.
