Number of Prison Fights, Injuries Rise

(Pierre, SD) — A new report reveals fights and injuries rose sharply in South Dakota state prisons last year. The Department of Corrections report shows they reached their highest levels in at least seven years. Assaults on staff jumped to 142 across the state’s five prison campuses. Twenty-two of those caused serious injuries, twice as many as the year before. The report also shows 447 fights between inmates in men’s prisons, with 49 resulting in serious injuries.
