(Bismarck, ND) — North Dakota Water Officals are launching an effort to make dams safer. Operation Safe Flow will provide full funding for an initial engineering study of six of the state’s highest-risk dams. According to a 2019 survey, out of the states 112 low-head dams, 53 of them pose an elevated risk to people. Low-head dams span a river channel and are usually shorter than 15-feet tall. The department of water resources said most of the dams were built nearly 100-years ago.
