North Dakota Highway 23 has reopened after a tank battery explosion east of Watford City.

State officials say the explosion happened December 29 at a Select Water Solutions site about 15 miles east of town. One tank was involved, and no injuries were reported. As a precaution, the highway was closed while crews assessed the risk of additional explosions.

The Department of Mineral Resources says a related fire at a nearby disposal site released about 4,000 barrels of produced water. An oil and gas inspector has been on scene and will continue monitoring cleanup efforts.

Drivers can now travel through the area, but officials say environmental monitoring is ongoing.
