Ammonia Spill Reported At Beulah Coal Processing Plant

(Beulah, ND) — Officials say a pump failure caused an ammonia spill at a coal processing plant in Beulah. About 80-thousand gallons of stripped gas liquor, which contains ammonia, leaked into a frozen ditch. The ditch stopped the spill from leaking into Antelope Creek which feeds into the Knife River. It happened at the Great Plains Synfuels Plant which is operated by Dakota Gasification Co. They convert lignite coal to fertilizer, natural gas and other products.
