(Brookings, SD) — Brookings Police Chief Michael Drake is providing leadership for South Dakota State University Police temporarily. Drake takes over for former SDSU Police Chief Timothy Heaton who was arrested for animal cruelty charges in December. The university reached an agreement with the City of Brookings to provide temporary assistance until the university can hire a new police chief. City Manager Paul Briseno says the city values its partnership with SDSU and cares about the safety of all its residents. Heaton was arrested on five counts of felony animal cruelty and had five German Shepherds seized from his residence.
