Lawmakers return to the Capitol on Today to open the 2026 South Dakota legislative session, marking the first day of the year’s work at the Statehouse.

The Joint Committee on Appropriations will hear an overview of the proposed fiscal year 2027 state budget.

Then, lawmakers will begin reviewing spending plans for the coming year, along with other organizational business.

At 1 p.m. Central Time, Gov. Larry Rhoden will deliver his State of the State address, outlining his priorities for the session.

The Legislature meets for a 38-day session, with all 105 seats on the ballot again this year.

Lawmakers will likely increase detailed committee hearings and bill debates later in the week as they move beyond opening-day formalities.
