(Wood, SD) — Taxpayers in Wood can expect property values to increase by one-thousand-500 percent. The Mellette County Director of Equalization said in a letter on December 29th the increase in assessed values in the town are attributed to sales that have been much higher than previous assessed values. The Department of Revenue requires county property values to be assessed within 85-percent of market value. One local bar owner attributes the higher prices to Californians getting pushed out of their home state and buying land in South Dakota. State Senator Amber Hulse says she’s seen a similar trend in the Black Hills over the past five years.
