(Sioux Falls, SD) — The Sioux Falls Police Chief is saying a recent attempted murder case sentence sends a message. A 36-year-old man was recently sentenced to 15 years in prison for firing a gun into a group of people in June of last year. Police Chief Jon Thum says the sentence is a warning that gun violence will not be tolerated. He says every case involving a gun is a very serious case for the department. Thum says an emphasis has been placed on stopping gun violence since the formation of its Violent Crime Unit in 2023.
