North Dakota Supreme Court To Hear Term Limit Measure

(Bismarck, ND) — The North Dakota Supreme Court will hear a lawsuit about proposed changes to term limits. The lawsuit says the legislature is violating an amendment passed in 2022 that says state lawmakers can serve no more than eight years in the House and eight years in the Senate. The state Legislature passed a measure last year that allows lawmakers to serve 16 years in either chamber and makes it so partial terms don’t count against term limits. The measure is expected to go to the November ballot. The lawsuit claims the legislature must reach a two-thirds majority vote in each chamber to change a constitutional amendment.
