(Pierre, SD) — Lawmakers in the state Senate are pushing to make a reduced temporary sales tax rate permanent. A bill to fix the rate at four-point-two percent was filed on Thursday. The bill would drop the percentage by point-three of one percent. Senate President Pro Tempore Chris Karr says its important to save constituents money but his concern is if the rate returns to previous levels, the extra revenue would go toward, “things that aren’t core government.” South Dakota collected about one-point-four-three billion dollars in fiscal year 2025, which was about one-point-five percent lower than 2024.
