Oil Companies Considering Extracting Lithium From Produced Water

news

(Bismarck, ND) — Oil companies in the Bakken are exploring how to extract lithium from the vast oil field. At least four companies are considering adding equipment to turn produced water, created in the process of producing oil, into the metal. It would optimize a waste stream that otherwise sends the processed water for permanent disposal underground. Lithium is becoming a key component in batteries for smartphones and other pieces of daily technology and it has been declared a critical mineral by the Department of the Interior. The Northwest Landowners Association is imploring the companies to make sure property owners are aware of the plans from the start.
