PIERRE, S.D. — South Dakota lawmakers are considering legislation to strengthen religious freedom protections on the final day to introduce individual bills in the 2026 legislative session.
Committees are hearing bills on educator retention funding, sales tax exemptions for data centers, public health reporting on cannabis use, and English proficiency requirements for commercial drivers. Budget writers are also beginning hearings with the Board of Regents.
Property tax relief is a major focus, with Senate lawmakers reviewing bills expanding exemptions for disabled veterans and seniors and clarifying owner-occupied classifications. Election-related measures are also advancing in the Senate.
During floor debate, the Senate will consider a bill increasing penalties for preventing religious practice, while the House takes up legislation creating criminal trespass protections for places of worship.
