(Pierre, SD) — A bill in the state Senate would ban countries from purchasing real estate in South Dakota. The bill advanced out of the Senate Commerce and Energy committee on Thursday. China, Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russian and Venezuela would not be allowed to purchase South Dakota land if it passes. It passed unanimously out of the committee meeting and will now head to the full Senate. Sponsors say its the next step after they banned foreign purchases of agricultural land two years ago when DHS Secretary Kristi Noem was governor.
