(Pierre, SD) — Healthcare providers could get the option to avoid conducting services in instances that violate their conscience. House Bill 1153 would allow providers to remove themselves from treatments that violate their ethical, moral or religious beliefs. The bill passed through committee with an eight-to-five vote and is expected to be heard on the House floor next week. Proponents say it will attract more potential employees to the industry while opponents say it devalues patients. Proponents add that similar protections have been passed in nine other states.
