Centerville Becomes First Municipal Agency To Join ICE’s 287(g) Program

(Centerville, SD) — The Centerville Police Department is the only municipality in the ICE 287(g) program. The program trains state and local law enforcement agencies on how to act as immigration officers. While other law enforcement organizations are participating in the state, Centerville is the only city organization to take part. Centerville Police Chief Lon Hatcher says it’s an opportunity for officers to get training in immigration law, which the city can’t provide. Other agencies participating in the program include Hughes County Sheriff’s Office, Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office, South Dakota Department of Corrections, South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation and the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
