(Pierre, SD) — The House Judiciary Committee is killing a bill to end the death penalty in the state. The bill was voted down ten-to-one on Wednesday. It was sponsored by Rep. Tim Reisch who said research shows the death penalty does not deter crime. Attorney General Marty Jackley opposed the bill, saying that certain crimes warrant capital punishment and cited the murder of a corrections officer by inmates in 2011. He said without capital punishment there would be no punishment since they were already in prison.
