South Dakota Lawmakers Face Deadline Crunch With Property Tax, Election, Budget Bills on Tap

PIERRE — South Dakota lawmakers are racing toward Monday’s key deadline ahead of crossover day, when most bills must clear their chamber of origin or die.

Appropriations committees are tackling school funding, special education, gaming revenue, and multiple property tax proposals. Lawmakers are weighing competing plans to cap or cut property taxes, including constitutional amendments that could ultimately go before voters.

On the floor, senators debate bills on the minimum marriage age, a ban on lab-grown meat, and creation of a new property tax relief fund. House members consider property tax reductions offset by higher gross receipts taxes, along with new limits on certain political committee donations.

Additional hearings focus on election transparency and social media data reporting.
