(Pierre, SD) — State lawmakers will not pass a bill to increase the property tax exemption for disabled veterans. The Senate voted 14-to-20 against the bill on Friday that would have increased the exemption from 200-thousand to 300-thousand dollars. Supporters said the bill would provide benefits to people in South Dakota who have sacrificed the most. Critics say that the bill would shift the property tax burden onto other homeowners like seniors, young families, and non-disabled veterans. The exemption program has been in place since 2007 and has been increased three times from 100-thousand dollars to its current level of 200-thousand.
