North Dakota Ambulance Providers Lose $500 Per Patient, Study Shows

(Bismarck, ND) — A survey of three dozen ambulance providers in North Dakota shows they are losing money. The study was conducted by PWW Advisory Group after a bill passed in the state House last year, requesting more information. It shows the average revenue per transport was about eleven-hundred dollars but 16-hundred dollars of expenses per trip offset that revenue. A consultant with PWW explains that most of that financial loss has to be made up by tax subsidies, fundraisers and now, service reductions. Most of the costs that ambulance providers pay are for personnel, but recently equipment costs have gone up as well.
