Lawmakers Postpone Plan To Limit Student Cell Phone Usage

(Pierre, SD) — South Dakota lawmakers are postponing a bill to prohibit students from using cell phones. The postponement comes after critics said many local districts already had similar established policies in place. State Secretary of Education Joe Graves also argued against the proposed bill. The decision to kill it was decided by the narrowest possible margin during an eight-to-seven vote in committee. An immediate attempt to revive the bill with an amendment failed by the same one-vote margin.
