Abortion Pill Ban Advances In Legislature

(Pierre, SD) — Legislation to prohibit abortion pills is advancing to the Senate floor. The bill advanced out of the Senate State Affairs Committee by an eight-to-one vote and is now one step closer to becoming South Dakota law. The committee first passed an amendment that changes the language of the bill to penalize any person using the pill instead of the original version that just specified pregnant females. State Attorney General Marty Jackley says making that change makes law enforcement easier. Opponents with the State Medical Association and ACLU say the bill could interfere with access to drugs used in miscarriage care and postpartum treatment.
