(Devils Lake, ND) — Werner Kunkel is back in state prison after being taken into custody by ICE. Kunkel made headlines earlier this week when his murder conviction 31 years ago was overturned. Officials believe it was the first murder conviction overturned in the history of the state. He was released from prison and awaiting a new trial when he was taken into custody by Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Thursday. Kunkel came to the U.S. from Germany as a child with his mother.
