Lawmakers Consider Bill To Make Data Centers Cover Utilities Costs

(Pierre, SD) — South Dakota lawmakers are considering a House bill to force data centers to cover utility costs. The bill would allow the Public Utilities Commission to determine actual costs incurred from the data centers that are customers of public utilities. Any center with a peak demand of 10 megawatts or more would have to cover the costs during a commission review to make sure they don’t get passed on to rate payers. The bill passed through the House on a 60-to-five vote and is now heading to the Senate floor.
