PIERRE — The South Dakota Legislature enters Day 36 of its 38-day session with most committee work finished and attention turning to the state budget and property taxes.

Lawmakers in the Joint Committee on Appropriations are introducing the Legislature’s main budget bill, along with measures funding state government operations and adjusting property tax levies and school aid formulas.

On the Senate floor, lawmakers consider one of the session’s most closely watched proposals — Senate Bill 245 — which would create a homeowner property tax reduction fund and transfer state money into it.

Several conference committees are still working to resolve differences on bills covering victim services funding, employer use of the federal E-Verify system, transfers from state reserve funds, and repairs to the Richmond Lake dam.

The regular legislative session is scheduled to end Thursday.
