Qury Fire Burns 9,000 Acres, Containment Reaches 27 Percent

(Custer, SD) — Firefighters say the Qury Fire has grown to nine-thousand acres southwest of Custer. Containment on the blaze is up to 27 percent. Officials say snow from the weekend kept some light fuels from burning but heavy fuels maintained and burned through the flakes as high winds provided new challenges. Some residents in the area are being allowed back to their homes with special permits but the Black Hills National Forest has issued an emergency closure. There area currently 350 people working on fire mitigation efforts.
