(Pierre, SD) — South Dakota farmers are expecting fertilizer costs to increase due to the war in Iran. A lot of chemical fertilizers come through the Strait of Hormuz, which is currently being blocked by the Iranian military. Farmers say fertilizer prices had been extremely volatile before the war. It’s forcing farmers to think of new ways to get their crops ready for harvest. Despite concerns about fertilizer and gas, farmers say the most impactful variable will be if there are timely rains that can offset the rising prices.
