(Yankton, SD) — A Yankton man is pleading guilty but mentally ill in a beheading case. Craig Nichols Jr. was in court Tuesday to change his plea in a murder case from January of 2025. He is accused of decapitating Heather Bodden in a Yankton apartment. The change in plea signals Nichols is admitting to the crime but was suffering from a mental illness when it was committed. He was sentenced on Tuesday to life in prison without parole.
