Thune Short On Votes To Remove Filibuster

(Washington, DC) — Senate Majority Leader John Thune says Republicans in the upper chamber do not have enough votes to bypass the filibuster and advance the SAVE America Act. According to Thune, the only way to pass the measure would be to “nuke the legislative filibuster,” but the lawmaker said the GOP does not have “anywhere close to the votes” to do so. The SAVE America Act would require proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections and President Trump has made it one of his top legislative priorities for months. Thune acknowledged that the president is “passionate” about the bill but noted that Republicans “are bound by arithmetic” in the Senate.
