(Washington, D.C.) — South Dakota Republican Senator John Thune is preparing for whatever might come his way with the upcoming Senate GOP Leader vacancy. Mitch McConnell told his fellow lawmakers this week he will be stepping down as the Republican head towards the end of the year. Thune already responded with a statement, saying “McConnell leaves enormous shoes to fill,” and he looks forward to discussing a new generation of leadership for Senate Republicans. The Sioux Falls native is being considered a top candidate for the position.
