(Centerville, SD) — The former mayor of Centerville is facing three first-degree murder charges on the night of Memorial Day. Now, more details are surfacing about his time in law enforcement. Jay Ostrem was part of two officer-involved shootings during his 21 years as a police officer in Gillette, Wyoming. He shot and killed a suicidal suspect with a rifle on September 27th of 1994. The suspect pointed a gun at a second officer when Ostrem shot him. Ostrem was also a shooter in the death of a suspect in 2001. State investigations found both incidents were justified. The 64-year-old man is currently being held on a one-million-dollar cash-only bond and scheduled to be arraigned on June 20th.
