DOE Backs No Phone Policy As More Schools Join

(Pierre, SD) — More South Dakota schools are getting onboard with the Gettysburg School District’s new no phone policy. And the Department of Education is supporting the idea. The Edgemont School District in southwestern South Dakota will be implementing the same lockable cloth pouches as Gettysburg in the fall. In a statement this week, the Department of Education wrote it wishes the schools “success in their efforts to minimize the issues caused by cell phones in the classroom.” Edgemont’s superintendent, Amy Ferley, said the district is moving forward with the policy because policing phone use became too much and was taking away from student lessons.
