Lincoln County Commissioner Faces Backlash Over Antisemitic Comment

(Lincoln County, SD) — Controversy still swirls in Lincoln County after a commissioner made a comment many call antisemitic. During a May 27th meeting, Commissioner Doug Putnam used the phrase “Jew them down” while discussing a lease with a local school district. The remark drew immediate backlash from other officials and the public. Commission Chair Tiffani Landeen says she was caught off guard but expects the issue to be addressed at the next meeting. Former state senate candidate Chad Skiles publicly rebuked Putnam this week, calling the comment “appalling.” Putnam has apologized to people of Jewish heritage over the phone but says the situation is overblown. He declined interviews but says he’ll speak at the next commission meeting.
