(Sioux Falls, SD) — Starting next week, South Dakotans will have a new way to challenge books they think are too graphic. And libraries are getting ready. A new state law gives people the right to appeal a book to a library’s governing board, and if that appeal is denied, it can go to court. At Siouxland Libraries, Director Alysia Boysen says she expects some concerns but hopes most can be worked out through open conversation. The library doesn’t label books by age, but parents can ask to limit what their kids check out. Boysen says the library trusts parents to decide what’s right for their own children.
