Rep. Dusty Johnson Launches 2026 Bid For South Dakota Governor

(Pierre, SD) — South Dakota’s lone U.S. Representative Dusty Johnson is officially running for governor in 2026. Johnson made the announcement Monday, saying he’s ready to bring “real leadership” and a “real plan” to Pierre. The Republican’s campaign will focus on cutting property taxes, boosting energy production, cracking down on drugs, and investing in education. He says he waited to launch until now to avoid voter fatigue and finish work in Congress first. Johnson adds this isn’t about leaving Washington, it’s about coming home. With his entry, most expected candidates are now in except for current Governor Larry Rhoden, who’s still undecided on a run. The primary’s set for next June, with the general election following in November.
