(Vermillion, SD) — A former University of South Dakota professor’s firing is sparking debate over free speech. Michael Hook was placed on leave and is being terminated after a Facebook post about Charlie Kirk’s assassination called Kirk a “hate-spreading Nazi.” The Board of Regents says Hook violated its policy on unprofessional conduct, but critics argue the move tramples on the First Amendment. Students and faculty are calling for his return with a petition to reinstate him. It has already gathered more than four-thousand signatures as of this morning, according to the change-dot-org page.
