(Pierre, SD) — Meta’s Instagram app will now have content restrictions for teenagers. South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley commended the company’s announcement yesterday, while stating that he wanted to “thank Meta for taking action to protect children online.” The announcement followed federal and state lawsuits filed by Jackley and 41 other Attorneys General last year against Meta, which state the company knowingly designed and developed harmful features to purposefully make social media addictive for children and teens. Meta announced that teenagers on Instagram will be restricted to seeing PG-13 content by default and won’t be able to change their settings without a parent’s permission. That means children using teen-specific accounts will see photos and videos on Instagram that are similar to what they would see in a PG-13 movie.
