Gianforte Says State Can’t Cover SNAP Benefits

(Helena, MT) — Montana is warning residents it cannot cover the lapse in food stamp benefits that’s coming Saturday. The governor’s office told NBC Montana the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program is a federal program that can’t be covered with state dollars without a promise of reimbursement. The statement also noted Governor Gianforte’s awareness of how important these benefits are to several Montanans. The US Department of Agriculture has warned there will be insufficient funds to pay full SNAP benefits in November if the government shutdown continues.
