(Pierre, SD) — Two bills to ban certain hemp products and kratom are advancing to the state Senate floor. Both bills passed through the Senate Health and Human Services Committee on their first readings with unanimous seven-to-zero votes. The first would force people who buy hemp-derived products to obtain a medical card for certain purchases. The second would ban the sale of kratom and kratom products from being sold in the state entirely. The South Dakota Department of Health reported six kratom-related overdose deaths in 2024.
