World War II Vet Celebrates 102nd Birthday

(Sioux Falls, SD) — The last surviving World War II submarine veteran in South Dakota is celebrating turning 102. Jim Black served on three different submarines until his honorable discharge in 1946. To honor his service and the work he continues to do, the Sioux Falls group USS Scorpion made the trip to his veteran home in Nebraska to celebrate with him. Black has stayed involved with the community, playing a role in the Discovery Bridge project and USS Scorpion Memorial on the Missouri River. The Sioux Falls group celebrated Black’s 100th birthday in late 2023 and said they’ll come back to honor him for every birthday going forward.
