(Pierre, SD) — The South Dakota Supreme Court says the lieutenant governor can cast tie-breaking Senate votes. Governor Larry Rhoden asked the Supreme Court to issue an advisory on the issue. They said that articles that say only the Senate may vote on passage of law and another that names the lieutenant governor the president of the Senate complement each other rather than create conflict. The opinion was issued on Wednesday. Governor Larry Rhoden thanked the court for its swift opinion on the matter.
