(Rapid City, SD) — A Safe Haven Baby Box is now operational at a downtown Rapid City fire station. It’s the first such box in the state of South Dakota. A push for a Safe Haven Baby Box has been gaining support since the body of a baby was found at a Sioux Falls recycling center in 2024. The Rapid City Fire Department is notified immediately when a baby is placed inside the box. The boxes provide parents and guardians an opportunity to safely and anonymously surrender a newborn in a crisis situation.
