(Pierre, SD) — Governor Larry Rhoden is signing into law the largest property tax cuts in state history. His signatures on Thursday also marked the last day of the regular legislative session. The first bill allows a half-percent sales tax with proceeds directed toward property taxes and the second is a vehicle bill, creating a fund for property tax relief. Democrats have criticized the bills saying the money could have gone instead to Medicaid, state employees or education. Lawmakers area set to return to the Capitol in about two and a half weeks for Veto Day, but for all intents and purposes the 2026 legislative session is over.
