(Fort Yates, ND) — A federal judge is sentencing a man to 11 years in prison for a 2023 murder. Deagen Running Bear pleaded guilty to charges of second-degree murder in the death of Elijah Red Tomahawk. The indictment states that Running Bear tried to hide Red Tomahawk’s remains but his body was eventually found in Fort Yates with sharp and blunt force injuries to his neck and head. Running Bear will have to serve five years of supervised probation after his release and must pay restitution. Three assault charges were dismissed as part of the plea.
