(Rapid City, SD) — A conference on homeschooling in South Dakota turned into an impromptu property tax debate. It happened between Republican candidates for Governor: Larry Rhoden, Toby Doeden and Jon Hansen. Doeden accused Rhoden and Hansen of shuffling property taxes over to the state sales tax without actually lowering costs for tax payers. Rhoden and Hansen defended the legislation they helped pass by saying it did relieve tax payers a burden because sales taxes were already set to return to previous levels. Rhoden claims the changes provided a 35-percent reduction in statewide homeowner tax rates.
