Man Pleads Guilty In Dead Wife Insurance Fraud Case

(Bismarck, ND) — A man is pleading guilty after authorities say he took out a life insurance policy on his dead wife. Prosecutors say 42-year-old John Unruh obtained a 225-thousand-dollar policy through Mutual of Omaha about two months after his wife died of influenza and pneumonia. Investigators say Unruh tried to collect on the policy about a week later and allegedly signed documents pretending to be his wife. Court records say Unruh claimed he told insurance agents his wife was already dead, but the agent disputed it. Unruh faces up to ten years in prison and a 20-thousand-dollar fine.
