(Washington, DC) — Governor Rhoden is moving forward with sending 12 South Dakota National Guardsmen to Washington, DC, but not everyone agrees with the decision. Rhoden says he backs President Trump’s push to make DC safer. However, some lawmakers, including State Representative Erik Muckey, are calling the move political theater and a waste of taxpayer dollars, pointing out that violent crime in DC is at a 30-year low. The soldiers, based out of Rapid City, will help with public affairs work under the federally funded deployment. It’s a mission set to last 30 days, with the option to extend it up to 90.
