(Canton, SD) — The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is warning people about a scam involving Venmo. Authorities say a person claiming to be Deputy Brown has been requesting payments and several people have said they have sent money to the fake character on the app. The sheriff’s office says neither law enforcement, nor the court system makes money through electronic payment systems. This comes after two other scams were reported last week where callers reported to be members of the sheriff’s office, requesting money from potential victims on the phone. The sheriff’s office is telling people to hang up if they are being asked to pay money electronically.
